Weeden Walking Beam Style Engines Walking beam engines are one of the most interesting engines to watch running. Weeden Manufacturing produced several walking beam style engines. Thanks Morphy Auctions The Weeden No. 8 has a brass boiler and firebox, with sight glass, on a metal base. This is a true beam engine with the cylinder driving the beam unlike most of the other Weeden beam engines where the beam is driven by a crankshaft. Introduced in 1893 and continued into 1910. Early models stood 8" high on a 4 3/4" X 5 3/4" base with a 1 7/8" flywheel, later models were 8 1/2" high on a 5 3/16" X 6 5/16" base with a larger 2 7/16" flywheel. The Weeden No. 38 has a brass boiler, a steel firebox and a wooden grey and black base. It stands 9 3/4" high with a 4" X 10" base. This is a predessor to the No. 138. Manufactured 1896 - 1914. Download .pdf copy of original operating instructions The Weeden No. 48 has a brass boiler with a gun metal finish, a blued steel firebox with a iron base with polished nickel edges with "The Weeden" embossed on it. The base is 6 X 10 1/2", it stands 8 1/2" high. Manufactured 1898 - 1918. The Weeden No. 138 has a polished blued steel boiler, the beam engine is mounted on a grey emaneled wood base. The boiler and engine are attached to a maroon pressed steel base that is 5" X 10 1/4", it stands 10 1/2" high. Manufactured 1915 - 1933. |
